Giving employees control over their benefits
Acerta
Context
Acerta, one of Belgium’s largest HR services providers, wanted to modernise how companies reward their people. The result was FlexPay—a flexible benefits platform where employees can swap bonuses or salary for perks they actually value, from bikes and tech to extra time off.
To bring it to life, Acerta partnered with Leap Forward and Kunlabora.

Turning research into real-world results
FlexPay wasn’t designed in isolation. It builds on an earlier service design track where we developed hyper-validated personas and mapped over 30 employee journeys for Acerta.
Those insights gave us a clear starting point: real employee needs, business constraints, and a clear sense of what matters to employees.
From there, we moved fast. Working in agile sprints, we prototyped, tested, and refined the experience alongside Acerta. Feedback came in through usability testing and weekly demos, letting us iterate quickly based on what real users needed.
We worked as one integrated team, designers, engineers, and product owners collaborating daily. This co-creation model kept decisions quick and the momentum high.
Combining choice with clarity
FlexPay is all about choice, but choice only works when it’s clear. The platform had to help people understand their options, compare trade-offs, and feel confident about their decisions.
We designed for clarity at every step. We rewrote complex language in plain terms, added smart tooltips to explain key trade-offs, and designed flexible UI components that adapt to different use cases.
And because real life is messy, we built for edge cases too — like split contracts or shifting eligibility. This ensured that even in the trickiest scenarios, the experience still felt smooth and intuitive.

A collaborative partnership
Giving people more control over their benefits sounds simple. But turning that into a smooth, scalable product is more complicated than it seems. Every choice FlexPay offers, whether it's a bike or a bonus, comes with rules, tax implications, and payroll complexity. On top of that, the experience needed to feel simple for every employee, on every device.
That’s where our partnership with Kunlabora came into play. Kunlabora handled the backend architecture. Meanwhile, we focused on research, design, and helping Acerta stay anchored in real user needs.

A platform that’s already making a difference
FlexPay is now live, and already helping employees across Belgium take real control of their benefits. For employers, it’s a modern way to offer flexible rewards without extra admin. For employees, it makes complex choices feel simple, personal, and easy to act on.
However, it’s only just getting started. The platform is built on a modular foundation, which means it’s designed to grow and adapt. With AI-powered suggestions and wider rollout on the horizon, FlexPay is set to continue evolving—and raising the bar for flexible employee reward systems.
