Context

What started as a short web design track in 2017 has since grown into a lasting creative partnership between Leap Forward, District 01, and NIBC Direct. Together we’ve released numerous digital products, created a comprehensive design system, and steered the brand through various innovative and technological transitions.

A pragmatic approach for efficient web design

Our collaboration with NIBC began with a relatively small task - the update and overhaul of the bank’s Belgian and the Dutch websites. With the client looking for a short turnaround time, we opted for a pragmatic approach, tackling the platforms one at a time through quick fixes and speedy iteration. Improving user experience and creating a consistent design language across the two platforms was our key focus.

Once we had a first successful assignment under our belt, another opportunity soon came along for us to prototype and build NIBC’s first mobile banking app.

Creating a scalable banking interface across platforms

With their online presence updated, NIBC’s next goal was to innovate their products and services through a mobile savings app. Being involved from the very start of the project gave us an opportunity to show off a few more of our skills, such as research and strategy, wireframing, development, and extensive user-testing, before handing over the final finished product.

With exceptional user experience front of mind, we repeatedly involved consumers in the design process through user-tests, mapping out their experiences and iterating as needed. We also kept the client involved through regular co-creation and feedback sessions. Once the mobile app was approved we built a web version as well, providing greater accessibility for NIBC Direct clients.

Spreading the word - from digital products to playful animations

What good is a shiny new app if no one knows about it? The new mobile and web platform represented a technological transition for NIBC, which needed to be communicated to their customers in a clear, engaging, and highly accessible way. So, we produced a series of in-depth explainer animations that covered various aspects of the transition from website to app, saving NIBC and their clients time in the process.

Starting with rough storyboards and script-writing, we created brand-specific icons, illustrations, and visual assets, and brought them to life with animation and sound design.

A comprehensive design system for consistent user experience

At this point we had worked with NIBC on a fairly wide range of deliverables, gaining a personal understanding of the brand’s identity and style in the process. With future collaborations in mind, we suggested the creation of a comprehensive design system to ensure consistency across all their current and upcoming touchpoints.

This meant cataloguing every asset we’d created for the bank, from buttons to brochures, and building a detailed design system to streamline any future updates and projects.

An online home for a new brand

Our most recent collaboration with NIBC was for the newest subsidiary company of theirs, Lot, a mortgage service that offers lower prices through a totally online application system. We designed and developed their website, and throughout the project we tried to bring a sense of personal human connection to the platform in order to compensate for the entirely automated application process.

Creating the Lot website also meant adding to the company’s brand and visual identity, and exploring what distinguished them from their parent-company.
